Importance of Command Line Basics

Image
Recently I had to work with a client who was a Mac user and I'm a Windows type of a bloke.  I accessed the client's machine over remote desktop, for a practical tutoring lesson on how to setup and use build tools. It took me by surprise, a bit, when I saw that he was using Mac OS X I though I might embarrass myself , but then I remembered that real ninjas don't panic so I just opened up the terminal, instead of poking around the file explorer (File Finder I believe it's called on Mac). After that it was mostly smooth sailing. I've been using Unix commands via  Git Bash on Windows for a quite a while and it sure has paid off.  There are plenty of operating systems out there and each has their own unique Graphical User Interface and it's hard to know your way around all of them. One of the advantages of knowing the command line is that is it's an universal tool, especially Unix commands, same command will work on both Linux and Mac. Unix command line c...

Blade Templates in Laravel

Image
Recently I've been getting into Laravel and the templating engine being used for the View portion of the Laravel MVC is the awesome Blade templating engine . Generally speaking if you used one templating language you can easily figure out others.  At that point it mostly comes down to choosing a template language that suits us the most, for example, I find EJS syntax somewhat ugly,  while Blade syntax is very eye pleasing to le me. Laravel - Blade Templates Blade is called using @ symbol, to define a master layout we use something like this: < html > < head > < title > App Name - @ yield ( 'title' ) </ title > </ head > < body > @ section ( 'sidebar' ) This is the master sidebar . @show < div class = " container " > @ yield ( 'content' ) </ div > </ body > </ html > Templates use plain H...

First Sarajevo Dribbble Meetup

Image
Yesterday was the first Sarajevo Dribbble Meetup: "Sarajevo Dribbble Meetup is an event for product designers, UX/UI designers, interaction designers, graphic designers, illustrators and all interested in digital design and branding, to meet, socialize, exchange ideas, participate in workshops and help Sarajevo Designs Community grow." There were two presentations,  Creating Design Systems , by Vildana Lojo and  Illustrations and portfolio building , by Aleksandar Savić. Both were very informative, especially from a perspective of a design challenged wanna be back-end developer! The event was hosted by Mistral  and most importantly I got a ton a laptop stickers! Thanks for taking the time to read this incredibly long blog post.

The "Evil" Microsoft buys GitHub!

Image
This isn't really hot news anymore but I find it interesting with how much panic lot of people responded to this. Google and Facebook have done a lot of not so nice things but they don't get nearly as much as hate as Microsoft does. And I know some hipsters  snowflakes might get their feelings hurt, but when speaking of evil greedy corporations it would be unfair not to mention Apple! In my opinion Microsoft under Satya Nadella is no longer the same company as it was under Steve Ballmer.  It's hard to forger that Ballmer referred to Linux as "cancer" and considered open source community to be a bunch of thieves and communist...  But in the past few years, under the CEO Microsoft has changed its view on Open Source, they have released their version of FreeBSD on Azure, made .NET Core available for cross platform development, they joined the Linux Foundation, released one of the most popular open source editor - VS Code and made their own Linux...

Static Site Generators

Image
So what is a Static Site Generator (SSG)? It something in between a Content Management System (CMS) and the old fashioned static site, which you would code in your text editor.  You generate a static website using raw data (Markdown, for example) and templates. SSG will have a build process which will generate all the files and folders for your site. There advantages and a few downsides to this. Advantages of using a SSG: Performance:  static sites are blazing fast, much faster then sites using a CMS Hardly any Dependencies:  they can be hosted anywhere with minimal configuration Security: since there is no back-end potential vulnerabilities are minimal Version Control:  easily integrated with version control and unit testing Reliability:   with no database involved site is likely to be more stable  Disadvantages of using a SSG: No Back-end : for example, if you need a shopping cart you would need an 3rd party solution Large Sites : Man...

Free Code Camp - New Curriculum and Changes

Image
Free Code Camp recently refreshed their curriculum with lots of new content. If you previously used the beta version you are probably familiar with the content, but if you're not keep on reading! Now, there are total of six new certifications, three previous certifications (Front-end, Data Visualization and Back-end) are now labeled as legacy certifications, but the good thing is you can access the new redesigned certificates for those.  The old certificate is gone a the downside is that if you had it linked somewhere (LinkedIn, Stack Overflow etc.) pointing to your old certificate it will be broken now. Old version of the Front-end certificate New version of the Front-end certificate Apart from the three legacy certifications the six new ones are: Responsive Web Design Certification (300 hours) Javascript Algorithms And Data Structures Certification (300 hours) Front End Libraries Certification (300 hours) Data Visualization Certification (300 hours) Apis An...

What is Laravel Homestead?

Image
What is Laravel Homestead and why would you need it? According to the official docs : " Laravel Homestead  is an official, pre-packaged  Vagrant  box that provides you a wonderful development environment without requiring you to install PHP, a web server, and any other server software on your local machine. " First thing that Homestead needs is a virtual environment to run in, so for this you can use Virtual Box,  Parallels, Hyper-V or VMWare since Vagrant needs a virtual machine. Vagrant Box includes the following software: Ubuntu 18.04 Git PHP 7.2 PHP 7.1 PHP 7.0 PHP 5.6 Nginx Apache (Optional) MySQL MariaDB (Optional) Sqlite3 PostgreSQL Composer Node (With Yarn, Bower, Grunt, and Gulp) Redis Memcached Beanstalkd Mailhog Elasticsearch (Optional) ngrok wp-cli Zend Z-Ray Go Minio The setup seems a bit daunting but the advantages are numerous, you don't really need to change anything on your system, since it runs in vi...
